The extension project was designed to equip teachers of Talisay City National High School with fundamental knowledge and practical skills in journalism. Recognizing the growing importance of media literacy, responsible communication, and effective information dissemination in today’s rapidly changing world, the project provided teachers with opportunities to develop their competencies in various areas of journalism and media communication.

The workshop series covered essential concepts and practices in written and oral communication, news writing, reporting, broadcasting, and media studies. Faculty members of the Department of Communication and Media Studies (DCMS) served as extensionists and facilitators, sharing their knowledge, experiences, and expertise in the field. Through a combination of discussions, demonstrations, practical activities, and interactive exercises, the participants were introduced to the fundamental principles and processes involved in producing and delivering media content.

A significant component of the extension activity was the development of the participants’ understanding of media ethics and the responsibilities of journalists. The sessions emphasized the importance of accuracy, fairness, credibility, responsible reporting, and ethical communication in the production and dissemination of information. Participants were also given opportunities to apply the concepts they learned through practical exercises involving different forms of media communication.

Beyond developing technical skills, the project fostered a collaborative learning environment between Talisay City National High School and the Department of Communication and Media Studies. The interaction between the teachers and DCMS faculty members encouraged the sharing of experiences, ideas, and perspectives, strengthening the partnership between the two institutions.

Overall, the extension project served as a meaningful avenue for enhancing the journalism and media literacy competencies of high school teachers. Through the guidance and expertise of the DCMS faculty members, the project contributed to developing more informed, responsible, and skilled educators who can help promote effective communication and media awareness among their learners.
