Cebu Normal University-Catmon Campus in northern Cebu is now one step closer to reality as it undergoes onsite and online assessment by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) today.
The CHED evaluation for CNU Catmon’s permit to operate and Certificate of Program Compliance (COPC) involves assessing its readiness and compliance with the commission’s policies, standards, and guidelines for the proposed two degree programs—Bachelor of Special Needs Education and Bachelor of Early Childhood Education.
Dr. Roberto Corcino, CNU vice president for Academic Affairs, says the establishment of these programs at CNU Catmon is more than just an expansion of the institution’s academic offerings.
“It is a deliberate and strategic move to respond to the growing need for competent, compassionate, and community-rooted educators who will serve children with diverse learning needs and those in the foundational years of development,” he says.
Catmon Mayor Avis Monleon, in a speech, says it has been a dream of Catmon to have a university and to provide the residents access to free higher learning opportunities.
“Maraming mahihirap, but intelligent and deserving students sa Catmon. They are deprived of higher and quality education as they cannot afford to go to Cebu City and enroll in private schools or tertiary educational institutions,” the mayor says.
The establishment of CNU Catmon, the mayor adds, is for the town and its every dreamer.
“We hope and pray thar our dream of having CNU will soon be realized. Gagawin namin ang lahat to make this dream come true for our people,” she adds.
The CHED validators check the campus’ physical, administrative and academic preparedness in today’s assessment.
Dr. Bernard Pantonilla, Education Supervisor II of CHED-7; Dr. Rita Tagalog, former Dean of the University of San Carlos’ School of education; Dr. Anna Lou Cabuenas, vice president for Academic Affairs of the University of the Visayas; and CHED Central Office’s technical panel for Early Childhood, Elementary and Special Needs Education Dr. Trixie Marie Sison and Dr. Ma. Christine Asuncion Dequilla compose the technical panel and regional quality assessment team (RQAT).
Dr. Sison and Dr. Dequilla join the assessment via Zoom, along with CHED-7 Regional Director Maura Consolacion Cristobal and officials from CHED Office of Programs and Standards Development. Also joining online are CNU top officials.
Others present onsite, on the other hand, are Vice President for Special Needs, Early Childhood Education, and Lifelong Learning (SNECELL) Venus Cortes, Curriculum Development and Enhancement Director Remedios Bacus, CNU-Catmon Campus Dean Rosario Fantonial, CNU-Catmon Interim Campus Director Jay Jumar Bacunawa, and CNU-Catmon Program Chair Manilyn Belara.
