CNU College of Culture, Arts and Sports Mental Health Awareness Seminar for Naga City Jail Personnel
As part of the Comprehensive Psychosocial Support Program for Different Government Agencies Project, Project Leader Dr. Ma. Rosita Hernani and Director of Extension Services Mrs. Laarne E. Pontillas, together with project members from the CNU Kinesthetic Department, Psychology Department, and College of Medicine, conducted a series of lectures and workshops for the personnel of Naga City Jail on June 17, 2025.
The sessions covered essential topics such as basic mental health concepts, common mental health conditions, and early warning signs. Participants were also introduced to practical techniques including breathing exercises, mindfulness, and time management. These were reinforced through guided activities, encouraging participants to incorporate these strategies into their daily routines.
In line with its commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being, Cebu Normal University (CNU) plays a vital role in promoting community health through its extension services for the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Naga City. CNU provides health and physical fitness education, mental health awareness initiatives, and medical outreach programs that aim to improve the overall well-being of incarcerated individuals.
CNU’s initiatives include psychosocial support services, stress management workshops, and wellness programs specifically designed to address the mental health needs of persons deprived of liberty (PDLs). Furthermore, CNU collaborates with BJMP to strengthen hygiene practices and disease prevention efforts, ensuring improved access to healthcare within jail facilities. Through these comprehensive efforts, CNU actively contributes to the rehabilitation and reintegration of PDLs, fostering a healthier and more supportive correctional environment.
