CNU Internationalization Office Launches Global Connect: Bringing the World to CNU

September 5, 2024, Cebu Normal University (CNU) – The Office for Internationalization at Cebu Normal University (CNU) proudly launched its latest initiative, Global Connect: Bringing the World to CNU, a program designed to bring international experts from various fields to engage with CNU students and faculty. This program aims to enhance the global perspectives of the university community by providing opportunities to learn directly from global thought leaders.

As part of the program’s debut, a lecture series was held today at the ACAS Auditorium, featuring two esteemed speakers who brought unique insights into language education and its evolving dynamics in the digital era.

The first lecture, titled “Redefining the Meaning of EFL and ESL Reading in the New Digital Paradigm,” was delivered by Dr. Michael Furmanovsky, a Professor of Cultural Studies at Ryukoku University in Kyoto, Japan. Dr. Furmanovsky discussed how the digital revolution is reshaping the ways in which English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and English as a Second Language (ESL) reading is taught and understood. His thought-provoking analysis highlighted the need for educators to adapt to new methodologies and technological tools to meet the changing needs of learners in a digital age. The lecture sparked significant interest and curiosity among the attendees, prompting an engaging discussion on the future of language education.

Following Dr. Furmanovsky, Dr. Aurelio Vilbar, a Professor at the College of Social Sciences at the University of the Philippines-Cebu, presented his lecture on “Developing Language Skills through Student Volunteerism Programs.” Dr. Vilbar, who also serves as the Director of Ugnayan ng Pahinungod, the UP Volunteer Service Program, emphasized the powerful role that volunteerism plays in language development. He shared practical strategies and real-life examples of how students can enhance their language skills while making meaningful contributions to society. His presentation resonated deeply with the audience, particularly with those interested in combining academic growth with community service.

The lecture series concluded with an interactive Q&A session, where students eagerly engaged with the speakers, asking questions that reflected their newfound perspectives on language learning and global citizenship. Feedback from the participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing appreciation for the opportunity to learn from international experts.

The Global Connect program marks a significant step forward in CNU’s commitment to internationalization, aligning with the university’s vision to foster global-mindedness among its students and faculty. By bringing the world to CNU, the program ensures that the university remains at the forefront of educational excellence in an increasingly interconnected world.

“We at the Office for Internationalization look forward to hosting more lectures and events under the Global Connect program, as it continues to bridge borders and bring global perspectives to the CNU community’, Dr. Janet Mananay, Director for Internationalization stressed.
