To further promote the Municipality of Alcoy as one of Cebu’s tourist destinations, the College of Tourism, Hospitality, and Hotel, Management (CTHHM) commits to assisting the municipality in achieving sustainable tourism.
This as CTHHM and the Local Government of Alcoy through Mayor Eugene Singson and the Municipal Tourism Office agree to conduct a needs assessment in the municipality during this morning’s dialogue at the university.
Through the extension project titled “Alcoy TOUR: Tourism Opportunities for Utilizing and Revitalizing,” CTHHM will assess the municipality’s existing and potential tourist sites, local products, tourism guidelines, and livelihood opportunities for the community.
To achieve sustainable tourism, Dr. Leigh Mijares-Fernandez, the CTHHM chair, says the conduct of community assessment is needed so as “not to sacrifice the environment for the sake of money and vice versa.”
Moreover, Prof. Laarne Pontillas, director for Extension Services, also underscores the need to empower the locals through inclusive consultation.
“We need to do a needs assessment and public hearing. We have to employ a bottom-up consultation approach because, at the end of the day, this is for the people,” she says.
Furthermore, Mayor Singson expresses optimism that the project will come to fruition for the benefit of both the community and local tourism.
“We are very happy for this orientation because we are able to validate our concerns. Through these inputs, nagkaroon ng direction especially that you are offering your support that you will be with us. This is really needed to make our policies consistent and sustainable,” he shares.
The meeting is also attended by CTHHM faculty members Dr. Ruby Melchor, Atty. Shannine Fortuna, and Prof. Sherlyn Salcedo.
CTHHM faculty members are scheduled to visit Alcoy this July.
