LOOK | CNU, BJMP explore e-learning for PDLs
In a significant push toward inclusive education, officials from Cebu Normal University and Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) convene for a dialogue aimed at expanding open and distance e-learning (ODeL) opportunities for persons deprived of liberty (PDLs).
Once operationalized, CNU is planning to extend ODeL program to PDLs for free, offering different degree programs.
Prof. Laarne Pontillas, director for Extension Services, says the university wants to provide PDLs a platform wherein they can pursue their tertiary education and provide them with equal recognition, access to resources, and opportunities.
“We are here to discuss how to improve their well-being… as they still deserve our love and forgiveness. The prisons are a place for them to transform, a place for rehabilitation, a place for reconnection, and a place for rebuilding their lives,” she says.
Dr. Genara Pacaña, director for Research and Development Publication, is a potent equalizer and a transformative solution to the problem of providing all Filipinos access and opportunity to quality education.
ODeL will eliminate geographical barriers, she adds.
The program is a welcome development for the BJMP. Present are officials and personnel from BJMP Regional Office VII and BJMP City of Naga.
Jail Senior Inspector Royette Arcipe, Chief of the Regional Welfare and Development Division of BJMP-7, recognizes the importance of the program in preparing PDLs for reintegration into society.
He said their regional director, JCSUPT Luisito Muñoz, even expresses the need to have it implemented regionwide.
JSINSP Arcipe promises to assist CNU in providing necessary data, including the educational attainment of the PDLs.
This latest dialogue reflects the university’s strengthened drive toward digital transformation, leveraging technology to further democratize educational access within penitentiaries.
