HISTORY OF CNU BALAMBAN CAMPUS

The idea of establishing an extension campus in Balamban dated back in 2001. A series of meetings and coordinating conferences of its forerunners led to its realization in early 2002, the time when Dr. Ester B.Velasquez, Governor Gwen Garcia, and Mayor Binghay, including their constituents, and Tsuneshei Company derived a great decision to begin the operation.

Instead of a seven-hectare lot, the initial site was in a far flung Brgy. Lamesa which can be reached in a 30- minute trip on steep mountainous barangay roads. The Local Government Unit (LGU) of Balamban used to provide transportation service using an old mini-bus in which the students had to pay P30.00 per day. The option was to ride the habal-habal for P42.00 per trip. As can be observed, travelling to the school site was accident prone.

The campus site and buildings were DepEd properties being used for high school classes with 280 students. There were 10 classrooms and a basketball court which were built and donated by Tsuneshei (a well- known Japanese company) used by CNU for its classes. Such were located beside deep ravines that posed natural hazards.

After a road accident in 2005 and during the Guinsaogon-Leyte landslide wherein cracks were discovered on the walls of the classrooms, and in view of inaccessibility of the campus site, the first assigned CNU-Balamban Administrator and the parents decided to move the classes to a safer area near the public market at Brgy. Poblacion, but only for a short period.

Classes were then moved again to another location using the facilities of Quail Hollow Resort now Alice Mountain Resort at the town proper. For more than four years, CNU-Balamban stayed in a property tagged as a โ€œuniversity in a resort.โ€ There was no existing legal agreement or contract between the CNU President and the Resort owner on such arrangement nor there was any written authority from the CNU Board of Regents or local government of Balamban which sanctioned and legitimized such operation of CNU inside the resort.

Then, there was a 2-hectare site donated not by the LGU but by the Mendoza family in Brgy. Nangka, which remained underdeveloped and still waited for the P5 Million PDAF funding promised by Cong. Pablo Garcia for the construction of CNU building and when it was materialized is likewise unforeseen.

ย As shared by the incumbent Campus Director, it was only in 2015 that CNU-Balamban got its site where it stands now for its forerunnersโ€™ dream to be realized and soar high.
