Cebu Normal University (CNU) strengthened its commitment to campus safety as students, faculty members, and administrative personnel participated in a university-wide fire and earthquake drills yesterday, October 6.
Held at the College of Teacher Education (CTE) Ground Floor Building, the fire and earthquake safety education and awareness campaign activity were organized by the CNU Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Unit (DRRMU) in partnership with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Region VII.
The campaign highlighted key fire and earthquake safety practices, including the importance of emergency exits and evacuation maps, emergency coordination, and properly accounting for students and employees during emergencies.

CNU President Dr. Laurence Garcia urged the university community to actively participate in fire and earthquake safety activities, emphasizing the importance of building familiarity with proper emergency responses.
“The drill is not merely an opportunity that we conduct because it is required. It is an opportunity to build muscle memory as it allows us to practice when things happen,” Garcia said.
He added that fire drills serve as a “test of systems” and help the university identify areas for improvement.
“Dili ni siya scripted, dili ni siya staged activity. Again, we will never be able to predict when disaster comes,” he said.
CNU expressed its appreciation to BFP-Pahina Central for sharing its expertise and helping strengthen the CNU community’s preparedness and capacity to respond during emergencies.
