Cebu Normal University (CNU) has officially expanded its regional academic presence after formally becoming a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Teacher Education Network (AsTEN), marking a significant milestone in the university’s commitment to strengthening teacher education and international collaboration.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) formalizing CNU’s accession to AsTEN was signed by AsTEN Chairperson Prof. Dr. Ngo Thi Phuong Lan and CNU President Dr. Laurence Garcia during a signing ceremony held tonight at a hotel in Cebu City.

CNU is one of the five newest members of AsTEN, alongside Universiti Brunei Darussalam, Hanoi National University of Education, Leyte Normal University, and West Visayas State University. With the addition of these five institutions, AsTEN now has 16 member institutions.

CNU’s admission to the network followed its successful compliance with the membership requirements and approval process prescribed by AsTEN.

Through the agreement, CNU officially joined the regional organization as an AsTEN Member Institution and commits to upholding the network’s vision, mission, objectives, policies, and principles.

As a member, CNU is expected to actively participate in AsTEN initiatives, projects, meetings, conferences, and collaborative activities. The university will also designate institutional representatives to coordinate with the AsTEN Secretariat and support programs that promote ASEAN cooperation, regional identity, and advancements in teacher education.

The partnership offers CNU valuable opportunities to strengthen its academic and institutional development through regional engagement.

Membership in AsTEN provides the university access to a broad network of higher education institutions across Southeast Asia, creating pathways for academic exchange and collaborative growth.

Among the key areas of cooperation are faculty, student, and academic staff mobility programs; joint research projects and publications; development of collaborative academic initiatives; digital learning and innovation programs; and participation in international conferences, trainings, and academic forums.

The partnership likewise enables CNU to engage in quality assurance and benchmarking initiatives in teacher education, enabling the university to compare and enhance its academic standards with those of leading institutions in the region.

Beyond institutional gains, CNU’s membership in AsTEN is expected to create meaningful opportunities for students, faculty members, and researchers through increased international exposure, expanded academic partnerships, and access to shared knowledge and resources.

The agreement also reinforces the university’s commitment to promoting ethical, inclusive, and culturally responsive educational practices aligned with ASEAN values.

By joining AsTEN, CNU strengthens its role not only as a leading teacher education institution in the Philippines but also as an active contributor to regional educational development and cooperation in Southeast Asia.

In his remarks, Philippine Normal University (PNU) President Dr. Bert Tuga welcomed the alliance’s newest member institutions. PNU serves as the lead founding institution and permanent AsTEN secretariat.

“To our new members, we are excited to work with you, to learn from you, and to grow together with you,” Tuga said.

PNU and CNU are co-hosting the 4th AsTEN Presidents’ Meeting and the membership signing ceremony. The event also featured cultural performances by the CNU Kudyapi Dance Troupe and the CNU Chorale, showcasing the university’s artistic excellence to delegates from across the region.
