Two years after the official signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between Cebu Normal University (CNU) and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Alegria, the CNU-Alegria Campus was officially inaugurated on August 28.
Located in the southwestern part of Cebu Province, the CNU-Alegria Campus is one of the three newly opened extension campuses this Academic Year, along with CNU-Argao and CNU-Catmon.
To recall, CNU and the Municipality of Alegria signed the Memorandum of Agreement on March 14, 2024, to ease the financial burden on students by bringing tertiary education within reach.
The campus opened its doors for Academic Year 2026–2027 on August 18, offering the Bachelor of Special Needs Education (BSNed) program.
Dr. Laurence Garcia, SUC President III, in his inspirational message during the inaugural address, emphasized the continuous commitment of the university in delivering quality education closer to where dreams are born.
“As we bring CNU closer to the communities of Alegria and the neighboring municipalities, we also bring with us the standards, values, and commitment to excellence that define CNU.”
“This campus must become an extension not only of our university geographically, but of our commitment to transformative and quality education,” he said.
With accessible education, Dr. Garcia calls on every learner towards a transformative journey as “young people do not have to leave their communities to pursue their dreams, but can be educated, empowered, and inspired to return and transform the communities they call home.”
Moreover, Cebu Provincial Governor Pamela Baricuatro, in her speech, underscored the importance of bringing tertiary education closer to communities, as it means allowing students to pursue their studies closer to home.
“Bringing educational opportunities closer to communities means giving more young Cebuanos the chance to pursue their dreams without having to go far from their families and hometowns,” she said.
She also added that investing in education is a step forward toward transforming individuals for the next generation.
“Investments in education are investments in Cebu’s future—empowering young people today so they can become tomorrow’s professionals, educators, leaders, and community builders,” she added.
Present during the inauguration were Alegria Mayor Gilberto Magallon, Vice Mayor Verna Magallon, Provincial Board Member Paz Rozgoni, and former Cebu 7th District Congressman Peter Calderon.
They were joined by CNU President Garcia, CNU-Alegria Campus Director Dr. Alex Tiempo, CNU-Alegria Campus Dean Dr. Erwin Corales, and former CNU President Dr. Daniel Ariaso.
