Mananay, and Dean of the College of Teacher Education, Dr. Venus Cortes attended the first National Higher Education Day Summit 2024 at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City on May 15, 2024.

During the summit, Dr. J. Prospero “Popoy” de Vera III, Chairman of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) presented the status of higher education in the country.

Dr. de Vera shared that in the Academic Year 2022-2023, more than two million Filipinos already have access to free higher education, a 32.6% increase from the beneficiaries from the Academic Year 2020-2021.

He also highlighted CHED’s strategic plan for 2024-2028 which includes inclusive access and student success, good governance and efficient management, and reinforcement of community responsibility in higher education. CHED also aims to position the Philippines as a regional hub in higher education in 2028.

Meanwhile, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. calls for higher educational institutions for an all-encompassing strategic approach to elevate the country’s quality of tertiary education. PBBM also urged the academe and various sectors to collaborate to provide the right skills and competencies to the youth, ensuring that students will thrive, not just survive.

CNU, as a multidisciplinary research institution, has been providing free education since 2017 under Republic Act (RA) No. 10931, otherwise known as the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act, “an act promoting universal access to quality tertiary education by providing free tuition and other school fees in State Universities and Colleges, Local Universities and Colleges, and State-Run Technical-Vocational Institutions.”

The event was part of CHED’s celebration of its 4th National Higher Education Day and the 30th anniversary of the commission under Republic Act (RA) No. 11522 on May 18, 1994.

The first National Higher Education Day Summit was also attended by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, Philippine Senator Chiz Escudero, and the Chairman of the House Committee for Technical and Higher Education, Mr. Mark O. Go. | LCD|cmm|rdm
