Reaffirming its commitment to quality teacher education programs, the Cebu Normal University (CNU) College of Teacher Education (CTE) and the Teacher Education Council (TEC) joined forces for a co-design workshop held at the Marcelo Fernan Hall today.

Attended by select CNU CTE educators, the co-design workshop discussed strategic areas that cover the reframed pre-service teacher education curriculum, research, graduate teacher education, and quality assurance systems, ensuring that the programs are responsive to the needs of learners and society across the region.

CNU-CTE, the lone Center of Excellence (COE) in teacher education in Region VII, commits to sharing institutional practices that would also serve as a framework for other Teacher Education Institutions (TEIs) in the region.

One of the best practices shared by the CNU CTE is the experiential learning of CNU education students in the university’s Integrated Laboratory School (ILS).

CNU President Dr. Laurence Garcia, in his opening remarks, acknowledged how teacher education has transformed through time, citing technology as a factor.

“The world our teachers are entering today is very different from the world that shaped many of us. Technology is transforming how knowledge is created and shared,” he said.

With the presence of artificial intelligence, he also added that students and teachers have become diverse, hence the need to continuously adapt.

“Our learners are growing up in a world that is rapidly changing—and our teachers must be prepared not simply to keep up with that change, but to lead through it,” he added.

Moreover, as a Center of Excellence in teacher education, he urged educators to continue producing excellent and innovative teachers as part of nation-building.

“Every teacher we prepare will eventually stand before a classroom of young people. And in that classroom, something extraordinary can happen: a teacher can awaken curiosity, build confidence, inspire a dream, change a life, and shape a future,” he shared.

TEC, the institution that oversees Teacher Education Institutions across the country, is mandated by law to conduct innovative and relevant pre-service and in-service teacher education and training programs, organize and coordinate collaborative research, and serve as a teacher resource center, among others.

Today’s findings on best practices in the workshop will help TEC provide a framework beneficial for TEIs in ensuring access to education and continuity of learning across teacher education programs.
