To bolster research productivity, the Cebu Normal University (CNU) – Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) College of Medicine (COM) spearheads a seminar titled, “Increasing Research Productivity in Higher Educational Institutions: The Value of External Grants and Collaboration” at the VSMMC AVR today.
The seminar is centered on the challenges and opportunities in academic research, particularly in securing funding for faculty-led projects.
It also covered effective strategies for fostering a productive research environment, emphasizing the importance of open communication among faculty members and the administration, collaboration with key stakeholders, and actively pursuing external grants from agencies, such as the Department of Health (DOH), the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), among others.
Dr. Carmencita Padilla, the seminar’s keynote speaker, a distinguished national scientist, and a former Chancellor of the University of the Philippines – Manila, urged faculty members of the College of Medicine to actively write research proposals and seek partnerships with government agencies and other stakeholders. She highlighted the necessity of overcoming financial barriers to produce comprehensive and impactful research outputs.
“It is the university’s responsibility to provide an enabling research environment… Do not fear rejections,” Dr. Padilla emphasized in her talk.
Meanwhile, the Vice-President for Research, Publication, Innovation, Commercialization, and Extension (VP-RPICE) Dr. Cristina Corcino, in her opening remarks, underscored the critical role of research in advancing knowledge, fostering innovation, and shaping the future of CNU as a leading academic institution.
She emphasized, “mayroon tayong pagkakataong itaas ang produksyon ng ating pananaliksik sa mas mataas na antas, palakasin ang reputasyon ng ating institusyon, at magbigay ng makabuluhang ambag sa pag-unlad ng kaalaman.”
A community dialogue was also held before the seminar to discuss strategies for enhancing the College of Medicine’s research productivity.
The dialogue included CNU administration officials, including the VP for RPICE Dr. Cristina Corcino, Campus Director for Main Campus Dr. Grace Malaga, COM Dean Dr. Ma. Socorro Manaloto, former UP Chancellor Dr. Carmencita Padilla, and COM faculty members, aiming to align efforts and set actionable goals for research development.

Ang seminar nakasentro sa mga hagit ug mga oportunidad sa akademikong panukiduki, ilabi na sa pagsiguro sa pondo alang sa mga proyekto nga gipangulohan sa mga magtutudlo.
Naglangkob usab kini sa epektibo nga mga estratehiya alang sa pagpauswag sa usa ka produktibo nga palibot sa panukiduki, pagpahimug-at sa kamahinungdanon sa bukas nga komunikasyon sa mga miyembro sa mga magtutudlo ug administrasyon, pakigtambayayong sa mga nag-unang stakeholders, ug aktibo nga pagduso sa mga eksternal nga grant gikan sa mga ahensya sama sa Department of Health (DOH), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), ug Commission on Higher Education (CHED), og uban pa.

Usa ka diyalogo ang gihimo usab sa wala pa ang seminar aron hisgutan ang mga estratehiya alang sa pagpauswag sa produktibidad sa panukiduki sa College of Medicine.
